COLUMBIA
37" long x 50" high x 9" deep

During the revolutionary period, the image of Columbia was used on flags, weathervanes and heroic paintings. She was often portrayed holding a flag. This particular example is hand carved and painted with a marble coloration. The flag is similar to one carried during the Revolution and reads - "We Appeal To Heaven." It is a reference to the Colonists' belief that Human Rights derived from a Creator who was not subordinate to the King of England.
